AI × Engineering · Talent · Governance

AI is rewriting engineering work. I study how engineering education and talent policy respond.

I hold a PhD in Higher Education from Tsinghua University and a BSc in Computer Science from Jilin University. I lead a Ministry of Education Youth Fund project on how AI changes engineering tasks and reshapes the competencies engineers need, and I am extending this work to the governance of AI in professional practice. Before this, as a lead writer on several Chinese Academy of Engineering advisory projects, I built a body of work on engineering education strategy and international governance.

Research

Research interests

One question runs through my work: what happens to engineering tasks, competencies and institutions when AI enters engineering practice. My earlier work on engineering education strategy and international governance is the foundation.

  1. 2015–2022 Comparing engineering education PhD research on engineering education at world-class universities, including early work on AI undergraduate programmes.
  2. 2022–2024 Strategy and rules Chinese Academy of Engineering advisory work on the discipline, a global database, accreditation standards and mutual recognition of engineers.
  3. 2024– Talent amid AI and tech competition A shift towards engineering talent under AI and technology competition, AI regulation and technology controls.
  4. 2026– AI and engineering work A funded project on how AI changes engineering tasks and competencies, and how that should be governed.

AI, engineering tasks and competenciesCurrent focus

As AI enters engineering practice, which tasks are restructured and what new competencies do engineers need?

My Youth Fund project explains how AI reshapes engineers' competency structure through task restructuring, and looks at new roles created by generative AI.

02

Governing AI in professional practiceExtension

When AI takes part in engineering decisions and knowledge production, how should oversight, accountability, qualifications and professional standards adapt?

I carry experience with engineering standards, accreditation and mutual recognition over to AI, and study how technology competition and controls affect AI talent mobility and research collaboration.

03

Engineering education strategy and international governanceFoundation

How should universities and engineering education systems adapt their programmes, disciplines and international rules to technological change and global competition?

Comparative research for Chinese Academy of Engineering projects on interdisciplinary engineering education, the academic discipline, a global engineering education database and mutual recognition of engineers.
